HumanFood FAQ

Questions? Good.

Everything you need to know about the food, recipes, allergies, feeding, buckets, subscriptions, shipping, and the brand.

The Food

What's in HumanFood?

High-protein kibble with freeze-dried raw inclusions, made for dogs of all life stages. Three recipes: Chicken, Lamb, and Salmon. Each one is formulated for a different kind of dog.

Across every recipe: real meat as the first ingredient, brown rice, sweet potato, beets, blueberries or cranberries, carrots, salmon oil, flaxseed, and a pre/probiotic blend with chicory root, brewers yeast, and Bacillus coagulans.

No artificial colors, no artificial flavors, no synthetic preservatives. Full ingredient panels are on every product page.

Is HumanFood AAFCO approved?

Yes. Every recipe is formulated to meet AAFCO Dog Food Nutrient Profiles for All Life Stages, including the growth of large size dogs, 70+ lbs as adults.

That means puppies, adults, seniors, pregnant dogs, and nursing dogs are all covered.

Where is HumanFood made?

Indiana, with full traceability on every batch. Real food made in a real facility.

If you have specific questions about the manufacturing process, contact us and we’ll answer them straight.

What's freeze-dried raw and why is it in there?

Freeze-drying takes raw meat and removes the moisture without cooking it. What’s left is nutrient-dense, shelf-stable, and tastes like what dogs actually want to eat.

Every HumanFood recipe has freeze-dried raw inclusions mixed into the kibble. Every scoop has both: the convenience and shelf life of kibble, plus the appeal and nutrition of raw.

It also makes picky eaters less picky.

Is HumanFood human grade?

No. We don’t claim to be. Human grade is a specific regulatory term with strict requirements.

HumanFood is made in a facility that takes food safety seriously, with quality ingredients and a transparent supply chain, but it’s still legally classified as feed-grade pet food.

What does complete and balanced for all life stages mean?

It means every HumanFood recipe meets AAFCO’s most rigorous standard. The same recipe is appropriate for puppies, adults, seniors, and pregnant or nursing dogs.

No need to switch foods as your dog ages. No puppy formula or senior formula upsells. One recipe, one bag, every life stage.

Are the ingredients sourced in the US?

Most are. We work with our co-manufacturer in Indiana to source domestically wherever possible.

Some ingredients, like certain vitamins and minerals, are sourced internationally because they’re not produced at scale in the US. This is industry standard.

What's the shelf life?

18 months unopened, stored in a cool, dry place.

Once opened, store in the bucket, or roll the original bag tight, and use within 6 weeks for best quality. The Best Before date is printed on every bag.

Recipes & Proteins

What recipes are available?

Three recipes, each built for a different kind of dog:

  • Chicken & Brown Rice with Superfoods: our everyday recipe. 28% protein. The default for most dogs.
  • Lamb & Brown Rice: chicken-free, red meat, high protein. For dogs with chicken sensitivities or owners who prefer red meat.
  • Salmon & Brown Rice: single animal protein, fish only, pea-free, allergy-friendly. For dogs with multiple sensitivities, skin/coat issues, or owners avoiding peas.

All three launch May 2026. Drop your email on the homepage to get notified the minute they drop.

Which recipe should I pick for my dog?

Three clear paths:

  • Pick Chicken if your dog has no specific sensitivities. It’s our most universal recipe and the default for the majority of dogs.
  • Pick Lamb if your dog reacts to chicken or you want a red-meat-forward diet. Includes pea protein and menhaden fish meal, so it is not for dogs with pea or fish sensitivities.
  • Pick Salmon if your dog has multiple protein allergies, skin or coat issues, or you want the cleanest single-animal-protein recipe. No chicken, no lamb, no peas.
What's the difference between the recipes nutritionally?

Same AAFCO statement, same prebiotic + probiotic blend, and same omega-3 sources. Different protein levels and animal protein sources:

  • Chicken: 28% protein, 15% fat, 5% fiber max. Highest protein of the three.
  • Lamb: 26% protein, 14% fat, 4% fiber max. High protein with red meat focus.
  • Salmon: 26% protein, 14% fat, 4% fiber max. High protein with omega-3 focus.

Lamb and Salmon also include taurine and chelated minerals, called proteinates, for better bioavailability.

Why does the Chicken recipe contain lamb meal and salmon meal?

It’s a multi-protein formulation by design. Small amounts of lamb meal and salmon meal balance the amino acid profile and add nutritional density.

The downside: if your dog has a confirmed lamb or fish allergy, Chicken isn’t safe for them. Pick Lamb, no chicken and no salmon, or Salmon, no chicken and no lamb, instead.

If your dog has multiple protein allergies, Salmon is your cleanest option.

Why is Salmon pea-free but the other recipes have peas?

We made Salmon pea-free on purpose. The FDA has been investigating a possible link between grain-free and pea-heavy diets and dilated cardiomyopathy, DCM, in some dogs.

While the evidence isn’t conclusive, we wanted at least one recipe in our lineup that avoided peas entirely. For customers who want to play it safe.

Chicken and Lamb both contain peas, and Lamb has pea protein. Salmon doesn’t. Three recipes, three philosophies.

Can I rotate proteins?

Yes, once your dog is fully transitioned to HumanFood. Rotation gives them different protein sources over time.

To swap proteins on your subscription, change the recipe in your customer portal. The change applies to your next scheduled order.

Do a mini-transition between recipes, 50/50 mix for 3 days, to avoid stomach upset.

Can I mix HumanFood proteins in the same bowl?

Yes, once your dog is established on HumanFood. Lots of customers do half-and-half bowls or rotate within a single feeding.

Just don’t introduce two new proteins at the same time during initial transition. Start with one, get them stable, then introduce another.

Will my dog need to re-transition when switching proteins within HumanFood?

Mini transition only. Because the base formulation stays consistent across recipes, switching from Chicken to Lamb or Salmon is much easier than switching brands.

Recommended: 50/50 mix for 3 days, then full swap. Some dogs handle direct swaps without issue. Watch their stool the first few days. If it stays normal, you’re fine.

Ingredients, Allergies & Health

What if my dog has allergies?

Tell us what they’re allergic to and we’ll tell you straight whether our recipes work. Full ingredient lists are on every product page. We don’t dance around allergens.

Quick allergen guide

  • Chicken-allergic dogs: pick Lamb or Salmon. Both are chicken-free.
  • Fish-allergic dogs: pick Lamb only. Salmon is fish-based, and Chicken contains salmon meal and salmon oil.
  • Lamb-allergic dogs: pick Salmon. Chicken contains lamb meal.
  • Multiple protein allergies: Salmon is the cleanest option. Single animal protein, no peas.
  • Pea-allergic dogs: Salmon only. Chicken and Lamb both contain peas.
  • Grain-sensitive dogs: all three recipes contain brown rice. We don’t currently offer a grain-free option.

What we don’t include in any recipe: corn, wheat, soy, artificial colors, artificial flavors, synthetic preservatives, or by-products.

Is HumanFood good for puppies?

Yes. Every recipe is AAFCO-approved for all life stages, including the growth of large size dogs, 70+ lbs as adults.

Puppies eat more per pound of body weight than adults. Roughly 1.5–2x at 4 months, tapering down through 12 months when they reach adult portions.

Is HumanFood good for senior dogs?

Yes. All life stages means seniors too. Many seniors do well on a slightly reduced portion.

Feed about 80% of the adult feeding guide amount and adjust based on weight and activity.

If your senior has a specific health issue, like kidney, liver, joint, or weight management concerns, contact us with the details and we’ll tell you straight whether HumanFood is the right call.

What about probiotics and gut health?

Every recipe includes a real probiotic + prebiotic blend, not just marketing.

  • Bacillus coagulans: a live probiotic strain that survives the kibble extrusion process and reaches the gut alive.
  • Dried chicory root: a natural prebiotic that feeds the good bacteria already in your dog’s gut.
  • Brewers dried yeast: additional prebiotic and immune-supporting compounds.

Chicken recipe is guaranteed at 100,000,000 CFU/lb of Bacillus coagulans. Lamb and Salmon contain the same probiotic strain.

What functional ingredients are in HumanFood?

Beyond the basics, every recipe includes:

  • L-carnitine: supports lean muscle and fat metabolism.
  • Salmon oil and flaxseed: omega-3 fatty acids for skin, coat, and joint health.
  • Cinnamon and turmeric: natural anti-inflammatories.
  • Sweet potato, beets, blueberries or cranberries, carrots: antioxidant-rich whole foods.

Lamb and Salmon also include taurine, an amino acid important for heart health, and chelated minerals, which are more bioavailable than standard mineral forms.

Does HumanFood have fillers or by-products?

No by-products. None of our recipes contain by-products by AAFCO definition.

The Chicken recipe includes chicken liver and chicken hearts. Those are organ meats, not by-products, and they’re nutritionally dense.

On fillers: we use brewers rice and brewers dried yeast, which some pet food educators call filler-adjacent. We disagree. These are upcycled ingredients with real nutritional value. We’re transparent about including them. Make your own call.

Feeding & Transition

How much should I feed my dog?

Depends on weight, age, and recipe. Cup amounts vary slightly between recipes because Chicken is 329 kcal/cup while Lamb and Salmon are 406 kcal/cup. Use the chart for the recipe you’re feeding.

Split into 3 meals/day for puppies under 8 months, 2 meals/day for older puppies and adults. For pregnant or nursing dogs, free-feed and expect intake to be 3–4x normal. For seniors, feed about 80% of the adult amount.

Adjust based on how your dog looks after a few weeks. You should be able to feel ribs but not see them.

How do I switch my dog to HumanFood?

Slow. Switching food fast causes stomach upset. Plan for 7–14 days, depending on how sensitive your dog’s stomach is.

Standard 7-day transition

  • Days 1–2: 25% HumanFood, 75% old food.
  • Days 3–5: 50/50.
  • Days 6–7: 75% HumanFood, 25% old food.
  • Day 8: all HumanFood.

If your dog has a sensitive stomach, stretch each step to 3–4 days for a 14-day transition. Don’t shortcut this.

My dog won't eat it. What do I do?

A few things to try first:

  • Have you done a transition? Most dogs won’t eat new food cold. Mix it with the old food for 5–7 days at increasing ratios.
  • Are you free-feeding? Dogs eat better on a schedule. Twice a day, 15 minutes, then the bowl goes away.
  • Try warm water. A splash of warm water on top releases the smell and makes most dogs more interested.
  • Have you tried a different protein? Some dogs prefer red meat, Lamb, or fish, Salmon, over chicken. Swap is free.

If you’ve done all that and they’re still not eating, reply to us. We’ll swap your protein at no charge or refund your order. Whichever works.

Can I mix HumanFood with wet food or toppers?

Yes. A lot of customers do. Just adjust the kibble portion down to account for the extra calories. Otherwise you’ll overfeed.

How long should one bag last?

Depends on dog size and recipe. Rough guide for adult dogs:

  • 10 lb dog on Chicken: 11lb bag about 5 weeks, 22lb bag about 10 weeks.
  • 10 lb dog on Lamb or Salmon: 11lb bag about 6 weeks, 22lb bag about 12 weeks.
  • 25 lb dog on Chicken: 11lb bag about 3 weeks, 22lb bag about 6 weeks.
  • 50 lb dog on Chicken: 11lb bag about 10 days, 22lb bag about 3 weeks.
  • 75 lb dog on Chicken: 11lb bag about 1 week, 22lb bag about 2 weeks.

Lamb and Salmon last slightly longer per bag because they’re more calorie-dense per cup, so dogs eat fewer cups. If you’re getting too much or running out, change your subscription frequency in the customer portal.

Sizes, Formats & The Bucket

What sizes does HumanFood come in?

Two sizes per recipe:

  • 11lb: good for small to medium dogs, or as a trial size before committing to the larger bag.
  • 22lb: better value per pound, made for medium and larger dogs.

The 22lb is the better deal if your dog gets through it in 4–6 weeks. Smaller dogs are usually better off with the 11lb to keep the food fresh.

What's the deal with the bucket?

The bucket is what makes HumanFood different on your kitchen floor.

Most people already dump their dog’s food into some random container so it doesn’t go stale or look like a bag of chemicals. We just made the container from day one.

Airtight, light-blocking, sized for the food, branded right. The bucket holds the food fresh and replaces the bag-on-the-counter look every other brand gives you.

Do I get a bucket every order?

Subscribers get a bucket free with their first subscription order. Every order after that comes as a bag refill at the same price. No second bucket.

If you want a second bucket later, you can add a bucket-only upgrade to any future order through your customer portal for a small additional fee.

If you’re a one-time buyer, the bag comes alone at the standard price. You can add a bucket to your one-time order for a small upcharge if you want one.

Are the 11lb and 22lb buckets the same?

No. Different bucket sizes for each format. The 11lb bag fits the 11lb bucket. The 22lb bag fits the 22lb bucket. They’re not interchangeable.

If you switch your subscription from 11lb to 22lb, or vice versa, you’ll need a new bucket to fit the new size.

What if my bucket gets damaged or worn out?

You can add a bucket-only upgrade to any future subscription order through your customer portal. Same upgrade option that lets you buy additional buckets.

If the bucket showed up damaged in your original shipment, that’s on us. Reply with a photo and we’ll send a replacement, no return needed.

How should I store HumanFood?

In the bucket. That’s what it’s there for. Airtight, away from light, on your kitchen floor or in a pantry.

If you don’t have the bucket, keep the bag rolled tight in a cool, dry place. Not the garage, not under the sink, not in direct sunlight.

Unopened bag: 18 months. Opened bag in a sealed container: 6 weeks before quality starts to drop.

Is the bucket recyclable?

The bucket is reusable, which is the better outcome. Instead of recycling it after one use, you reuse it as long as you’re a subscriber.

When it eventually wears out, the plastic is recyclable in most municipal programs. Check your local rules.

Subscription & Account

How do subscriptions work?

You pick a recipe, a size, and a delivery frequency at checkout. We ship at that cadence.

You can change anything: frequency, protein, size, address, or payment, anytime through your customer portal.

Subscribers get the bucket free with their first order. Every shipment after that is a bag refill at the same price. You’re never locked in. Cancel anytime in the portal.

How do I manage my subscription?

Log into your account at humanfood.co and click Manage Subscription. You can:

  • Pause for 30, 60, or 90 days.
  • Skip a single upcoming order.
  • Change your delivery frequency.
  • Swap protein: Chicken, Lamb, or Salmon.
  • Change between bag and bucket format.
  • Update shipping address.
  • Update payment method.
  • Cancel.

Most things take 30 seconds. If something’s not working, reply to us and we’ll handle it from our end.

How do I cancel my subscription?

In your customer portal under Manage Subscription, click Cancel.

Before you cancel: you can also pause it, skip a delivery, change the protein, or push the next order out 90 days. Cancel doesn’t have to be the only option.

If you do cancel, your subscription ends immediately and you won’t be charged again.

How do I pause my subscription?

In your customer portal under Manage Subscription, click Pause. Pick 30, 60, or 90 days.

Your subscription holds at the same price and protein. When the pause ends, shipments resume automatically.

Use this for travel, overstock, or just a break. It’s the most common alternative to canceling.

How do I change my delivery frequency?

In your customer portal under Manage Subscription, click Change Frequency.

Most subscribers choose every 4, 6, or 8 weeks depending on dog size and how fast they go through the bag.

If you keep ending up with too much or too little food, frequency adjustment is the fix.

How do I switch proteins on my subscription?

In your customer portal under Manage Subscription, click Swap Product. You can change between Chicken, Lamb, and Salmon at any time.

The change applies to your next scheduled order. If you’re mid-bag and want to do a mini-transition, time the swap so you have about 3 days of overlap.

How do I update my shipping address?

In your customer portal under Manage Subscription, click Update Address. Change it before your next order processes.

Once it’s shipped, we can’t reroute it. If your order already shipped to the wrong address, reply to us with the new address and we’ll work with the carrier to redirect it where possible.

How do I update my payment method?

In your customer portal under Manage Subscription, click Update Payment. Add a new card, then set it as default.

Your next order will charge to the new card. If the update payment page isn’t working for you, reply to us and we’ll send a secure update link directly.

Shipping, Delivery & Returns

Where do you ship?

Continental US only for now. We don’t ship to Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, or international destinations yet. Expanding to more locations is on our list.

How long does shipping take?

Most orders arrive in 2–5 business days. Subscription orders ship within 24 hours of processing. One-time orders ship within 24 hours.

You’ll get tracking by email when it’s out the door.

How much is shipping?

Shipping rates depend on your location and order size. Final cost is shown at checkout. Subscribers often get free shipping at certain order sizes. Check your cart for the threshold.

My order hasn't arrived. What do I do?

First, check your tracking link from the shipping email. If the carrier shows delivered but you don’t have it, check with neighbors, your front desk, and the side of your house.

Most missing packages turn up within 24 hours.

If it’s been 7+ days from the ship date or your tracking shows a problem, reply to us with your order number. We’ll dig in and either redirect it or send a replacement.

My package arrived damaged. What do I do?

Reply with a photo of the damaged package or product. We’ll send a replacement the same day. No return needed.

Keep what you got or toss it. We just need the photo for our records and to file the claim with the carrier.

What's your return policy?

We don’t ask for the food back. If your dog won’t eat it or it’s not working out, reply to us and we’ll either swap your protein or refund the order. Whichever you want.

We offer this because we’re confident in the food. And because shipping back kibble is a waste of everyone’s time.

Do you offer a satisfaction guarantee?

Yes. If your dog won’t eat it after a proper 7-day transition, we’ll either send you a different protein or refund the order.

No back-and-forth, no return shipping, no asterisks.

My dog passed away. How do I cancel?

We’re so sorry.

You can cancel in your customer portal under Manage Subscription, or reply to us and we’ll handle it for you immediately.

No offers, no upsells, no follow-up emails. We’ll mark your account so you won’t hear from us again unless you reach out.

If there’s another dog in your life someday, your account will be here.

The Brand

Who started HumanFood?

Rafe Wilkinson. The brand started with a rescue named Beans who shit in the corner her first night home, rolled in it, and dragged it up the wall.

He cleaned her up, fed her dinner, and she slept in the bed.

That’s the brand. Not the mess. The part where you fed her anyway. Beans is where this started. The full origin story is on the About page.

Where can I buy HumanFood in stores?

Online only right now. Retail coming soon.

What's The Dog House?

Our community. Real dogs. Real owners. No perfect pet ads.

The Dog House is where the imperfect ones get celebrated: your dog who’s scared of the vacuum, eats furniture, ran into a glass door, or licks her own ass and then your face.

We feature members on our channels. We drop new recipes and limited products to The Dog House before anyone else. It’s free to join. Apply through the link on our homepage.

How do I get featured on your social?

Tag @humanfood in your post or story with a real moment. Not the polished version. We’re looking for the dog who ate the couch cushion.

Members of The Dog House get featured most often. The application is on our homepage.
